Who we are

UCEP (Uwakaneme Community Education Project) is a UK registered, not for profit, charity set up to pay school fees and provide additional support for children from disadvantaged families in very poor communities in West Africa.

What do we do

UCEP has a village-based community focus, and we aim to minimise obstacles to children’s formal education and their future development to become exemplary citizens. Through our teams working within each community we serve, we actively engage parents, teachers, and community leaders in helping with the holistic development and safeguarding of our pupils.

100% of your gift is dedicated to delivering UCEP scholarships programme. A minimum of 80% goes directly to paying school fees and to pupil development support. The rest goes to fundraising and support services.

Why we do it

According to a World Bank report, “In 2018, four out of five people below the international poverty line lived in rural areas. Half of the poor in these communities are children. About 70 percent of the global poor aged 15 and older have no schooling or only some basic education.”

In West Africa, many children are now growing up in communities where poverty, violence and child exploitation are becoming normal. We believe that if children are educated, coached, and mentored in good character-building practices from a young age, their exemplary behaviour as good citizens will positively influence their peers, and their wider communities.
