Most Nigerians, whether residing in Nigeria or in the diaspora, have cultural roots in a village they refer to as their ancestral home. Over the years, many of these villages have been largely abandoned by the adult population, who have migrated to towns, cities, and other countries in search of better education and economic opportunities. As a result, the villages are now predominantly inhabited by women and children.
Having achieved some of their personal and professional goals, and often with increased disposable income, many feel a strong desire to give back to their ancestral communities.
However, due to the demands of their busy lives and their distance from these villages, they often find it challenging to deploy funds effectively or manage charitable projects in a structured, sustainable manner. More importantly, they are frequently unable to measure the impact of their contributions, which can lead to frustration, disillusionment, and, in some cases, project abandonment.
In response to these challenges, the Uwakaneme Community Education Project (UCEP) has developed a partnership programme for Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora. This initiative supports individuals and families in delivering primary school scholarship projects within their own family villages.
